MPV blood test is a test performed to measure the size of the platelets. It shouldn’t be confused with platelet count in the Complete Blood Count (CBC) test because the platelet’s size is measured in MPV while the number of platelets is counted in a CBC test. MPV test can reveal the efficiency of the bone marrow in producing platelets. Changes in the size of platelets have a huge effect on a person’s overall well-being.

It should be noted, though, that MPV blood test is only capable of revealing some irregularities in the platelets. That is why doctors need to conduct additional diagnostic tests before giving any conclusive diagnosis. MPV test results are included in the CBC test and understanding what they mean is essential in gaining a better understanding of one’s health problem.

Why is MPV Blood Test done?

Mean Platelet Volume or MPV blood test is primarily ordered to assess the production of platelet in the bone marrow by measuring the size of the platelet in the bloodstream. Typically, a person with serious platelet production problem will register a low count of platelets. With MPV, the doctor can detect platelet problems much earlier as MPV measures the average size of platelets. Newer platelets are typically bigger than older ones, so if the MPV test reveals low values, it could mean that the bone marrow is producing less new platelets, even if the platelet count is normal.

The normal range for MPV blood test should be anywhere between 7.5 and 11.5 fl. It shouldn’t go any lower or higher than this range. If this occurs, it would be best for the individual to consult a doctor.

Importance of determining the size of the platelets

Platelet size should be measured in order to determine the efficiency of the bone marrow in producing this type of blood cell. A well-functioning bone marrow manufactures bigger and newer platelets efficiently. Platelets play very important roles in the body’s defense mechanism and repair system. They are essential in the process of blood clotting. Platelets work by clumping together when the epithelial tissues, veins and internal organs sustain cuts, thereby preventing blood loss.

What does abnormal MPV blood test result mean?

Abnormal MPV test result is a cause for concern as it signifies a problem in the production of platelets in the bone marrow. MPV could be abnormally low or high.

  • Low MPV

Abnormally low MPV test result is an indication of insufficient platelets produced in the bone marrow. This is medically referred to as thrombocytopenia which causes severe bleeding even from a small cut.

  • High MPV

High MPV is more common than low MPV and means that high amounts of platelets are produced in the bone marrow. People with this condition are at risk of developing heart disease, stroke and even diabetes. Thrombocytosis or high MPV causes unnecessary blood clotting among affected individuals.

Treatment for abnormal MPV blood test result is dependent on the underlying cause and severity of the associated medical condition. In some cases, the patient is referred to a hematologist for a more comprehensive and definitive diagnosis and treatment.
