The human body is composed of 75% water, and also loses water regularly through sweating, urinating, and breathing. Dehydration occurs when a person loses fluid more than the amount it takes into the body. Symptoms of dehydration in women are more common on those who are expecting. When pregnant, some women find it hard to drink enough fluids. On top of that, they also lose fluids through vomiting or morning sickness that many pregnant women go through.
Signs of Dehydration in women
Signs and symptoms of dehydration may differ in severity for every woman. These signs are the body’s way to inform you of the fluid imbalances that are happening within. Mild dehydration signs include thirst and mouth dryness.
For severe cases, signs include parched mouth, extreme thirst which leads to inability to drink water, urine with deep amber color and low volume, low blood pressure, sunken dry eyes, wrinkled skin, and rapid breathing.

Symptoms of dehydration in women usually start off with thirst that may progress to more alarming signs. When a woman’s body loses at least 2% of body fluids, symptoms may include:
- Dry mouth
- Unusual tiredness
In more progressive stage of dehydration, the symptoms are:
- Dry skin
- Low urine volume
- No tears when crying
- Lightheadedness or dizziness
- Abnormally dark urine
Meanwhile, these are the symptoms of severe dehydration:
- Reduced or no urine output
- Increased heart and respiration rate to compensate the low blood pressure and plasma volume which may lead to high fever
- Extreme sleepiness
- Low blood pressure
- Sunken eyes
Dehydration Effects on Women

The truth is, with less water the body’s ability to burn down fats slows down which is why dehydrated women generally gain more weight. The kidneys work as blood purifier and when they are deprived with water, their operation is affected and become stressed which in turn affects the liver. Since the liver works as fat converter, when it is stressed, weight gain will ensue.
Dehydration causes the skin to become saggy and lose its elasticity. When the lost fluid is not replenished, this encourages the appearance of more fine lines and wrinkles.

Treatment and Prevention of dehydration
The only way to treat dehydration is to replenish the lost fluid. It is always easier to prevent dehydration from worsening than treating it. The body needs at least 8 to 10 glasses of water a day to keep it well hydrated. Water by itself cannot completely help resolve dehydration because it does not contain electrolytes. There are oral solutions available that can help replace the lost electrolytes. As soon as dehydration is managed, the symptoms of dehydration in women would also slowly disappear. If at any time you feel that the situation is getting worse, consult your doctor immediately; for if dehydration is not treated, it can lead to coma or even death.
